italian adventure!

So, im in italy at last! thank you so much to all of my sponsors and people who donated to make this once in a life time experience possible. I spent a week in Tuscany in a small villa with a lot of AFSers. We had our week orientation there and they scenery was just spectacular. We visited Siena and Florence while we were there, both amazing cities. Now Im in Pesaro and its the perfect place to live. My host family is the best and we have been getting along just awesome. I must admit that ive never had a bad meal while here in Italy and I am in no rush to go home. I love Italy and everything they have to offer here and i plan to take advantage of all the opportunities offered to me :D once again thank you to all who made this trip possible. i will forever be greatful!

Summer home stay in Italy

Hello, my name is Estefany Saracay and I currently live in Houston, Texas. I am a freshman at Raul Yzaguirre School for Success. Recently, I applied to go abroad this summer (2009) for a home stay program hosted in Italy through the American Field Service (AFS) intercultural student exchange program.

My reason for wanting to go abroad to Italy is because Italy is home to the greatest number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Heritage is our legacy from the past, what we live with today, and what we pass on to future generations. I have a deep passion about learning and gaining new knowledge about other cultures other than my own. I also have a passion about learning about the arts of other cultures.

Right now, as a freshman, I am barely starting out high school but I manage to keep myself very busy amidst a slew of homework, studying, sports, social life, and let’s not forget sleeping. I am in the RYSS girl’s soccer team and I am a weapon barer for the RYSS color guard. My family, friends, music, and learning new things are my life. I find great importance in giving back to the world and I am very excited to have been given this opportunity.

I have applied for a scholarship with the AFS and I was one of the few students chosen to receive this $6,000 scholarship. Even though I have received this scholarship, I am still in need of financial help. My one and only young sister, Nancy Saracay, has been in the process for a kidney transplant for quite some time. After many exams, it has resulted that my mother, Sandra Saracay, will be her donor. Her transplant date has been set for sometime in early June. Due to my young sister’s transplant, my mom will be unemployed for three months. Her task at present time is to save up as much as she can, from now until my little sister’s transplant, in order to be able to live off of during those months of unemployment. Her saving will go towards things like home bills, food, and any other necessary expenses.

Hopefully, I will be able to raise enough money for this great experience of a lifetime! My goal is to raise $3,000 to cover all the costs of my trip and stay in Italy for this upcoming summer. I am working very hard to raise money through several fundraisers I am planning over the next few months, but I still need some help to make this dream happen. Thank you for taking interest in my blog and reading about my future hopes and dreams. Whatever you are able to give is greatly appreciated. No amount is too small. I know that times are tough, but every little bit will help me get a step closer. Click on the ChipIn! gadget on the top right of this blog to help me with my journey, by making a secure non tax-deductible donation. I would greatly appreciate it if you could forward my blog to anyone else who you think might be interested in sponsoring my AFS experience by forwarding the link http://estefanysaracay.blogspot.com/. Thank you so much!
